Tookes’ performance during the Spring Fashion Shows was a primary factor in Style’s decision to name her the publication’s top new model in November of 2011. In 2012, she was one of eleven new models to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which takes place annually. The show for 2012 was recorded in November, and it was shown for the first time on the CBS network on December 4th. The evening before the broadcast of the fashion show, Tookes, along with fellow Victoria’s Secret models Behati Prinsloo and Jacquelyn Jablonski, appeared as guests on the episode of Hawaii Five-0 titled “Ha’awe Make Loa” that aired on December 3 on CBS.
Tookes spent her entire childhood in the city of Huntington Beach, in the state of California. She has a sister who is 19 years her junio. In 2015, she was inducted into the Victoria’s Secret Angels program. Because Tookes was chosen to wear the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Fantasy Bra (which had a value of $3 million in 2016) at the show that took place in Paris, France in 2016, she became the third black model to ever do so. The show was hosted in Paris. Tookes made the announcement in September 2020 that she was engaged to Juan David Borrero, her partner of four years at the time. In addition to his position at Snap Inc. as director of international markets, he is the son of doctor Alfredo Borrero Vega, who serves as the Vice President of Ecuador. They tied the knot at the Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco in Quito, Ecuador on September 4th, 2021. She made the announcement on her Instagram account on November 21, 2022, that she and he are expecting their first child together.
