About James Lofton
American retired football player and coach James David Lofton. Although he was a wide receiver with the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Raiders, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, and Philadelphia Eagles during his time in the National Football League, he is best remembered as a former coach for the San Diego Chargers.
The Green Bay Packers selected James Lofton, a future hall-of-famer, with the first overall pick in 1978. He was an outstanding athlete and an All-American wide receiver at Stanford University, where he also excelled in track and won the NCAA long jump championship as a senior.
With his speed and excellent hands, Lofton was a deep danger at wide receiver in football. As a result of receiving 46 passes for 818 yards and six touchdowns, he was voted the NFL’s Rookie of the Year. Lofton caught 764 passes for 14,004 yards and six seasons with 1,000+ receiving yards while playing for Green Bay, the Los Angeles Raiders, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, and the Philadelphia Eagles throughout the course of his 16-year career.
Having been chosen to play in eight Pro Bowls—seven while playing for Green Bay and one while playing for Buffalo—Lofton became the oldest player in league history to accumulate 1,000 receiving yards in a season in 1991. At the time, he was 35 years old. He hauled in 41 passes for 759 yards and eight scores in 13 playoff games. He had 100-yard efforts in three of those playoff contests.
At the time of his retirement, Lofton had the most receiving yards in the NFL with 14,004 in his career.
