About Jada Pinkett Smith
She started out in A Different World before she traveled to a different reality in The Matrix Reloaded. As an actress, philanthropist, author, director, singer, mother and wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith is probably one of the most diversely busy ladies in Hollywood. Known for her films like The Nutty Professor, Madagascar, Ali, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, this Baltimore, Maryland native discovered her passion for the stage at a young age when her grandmother enrolled her in piano and dance classes. She fell in love with performing and never looked back.
Triple Threat Skills
Majoring in dance and theater in college before moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, Jada got her start by landing walk-on roles in a variety of TV series including Doogie Howser, M.D. and 21 Jump Street before becoming a cast member on A Different World in 1991.
In the mid-‘90s, Jada made a successful transition into film with lead roles in Jason’s Lyric and A Low Down Dirty Shame. But what really sealed the deal was her leading lady performance opposite Eddie Murphy in the 1996 comedy The Nutty Professor. The film was a major success and led to roles in more mainstream films like Set It Off and Scream 2. The year after her breakthrough with The Nutty Professor, Jada married her longtime actor/musician boyfriend Will Smith.
The couple originally met when Jada auditioned for the role of Will’s girlfriend on his TV series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Even though she didn’t get the casting agents’ attention, she did catch Will’s eye and they began dating in 1995. But Jada wasn’t solely interested in acting and playing house with her superstar hubby. She began pursuing singing career and founded her own band, Wicked Wisdom, in 2002. Wicked Wisdom, for which Jada is the lead singer, opened for Britney Spears’ tour in 2002. The band also landed the second stage slot at Ozzfest in 2005.
Giving Back
The attractive power couple founded the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation which works with inner-city youth in Jada’s hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. Philanthropy is a very active component in Jada’s life; she has worked with The Lupus Foundation, the Hollywood Education and Literacy Program (HELP) and donated $1 Million dollars to the Baltimore School of the Arts in memory of her close friend Tupac Shakur.
Her significant charity work led Oprah to ask Jada to become a featured judge on her reality TV charity show Oprah’s Big Give. Jada is also an active politico, having been a fierce and vocal supporter of President Barack Obama in the ‘08 election and throughout his presidency. She has expressed interest in playing Michelle Obama should any movie be made.
A serious advocate for women’s rights, Jada has also authored a children’s book titled Girls Hold Up This World and also designs a clothing line, Maja, with the slogan, “Sister Power.” She has flexed her girl-power muscles in multiple business ventures including starting her own music company, 100% Womon Productions.
A New Generation Of Stars
Will and Jada have two children together: son Jaden, born in 1998 and daughter Willow, born in 2000. Jada is also step-mother to Smith’s child from an earlier marriage, son Trey. Two of their children caught the performance bug early and launched careers of their own. Jaden is an actor and singer as is his younger sister, Willow—who loves to “whip her hair back and forth.” The family’s 100-acre home in Malibu serves as home base for this Tinseltown royal family.
