About Jack Fisk
Jack Fisk, an American production designer and director renowned for his work with Terrence Malick as a production designer, working on all eight of the director’s early films, including Badlands (1973), Days of Heaven (1978), The Thin Red Line (1998), and The Tree of Life (2011).
On Brian De Palma’s Carrie (1976), in which his wife, Sissy Spacek, played the lead part, Fisk served as art director. He frequently works with Terrence Malick and David Lynch as filmmakers (whom he has known since childhood). All of Malick’s first eight feature films, as well as Lynch’s The Straight Story (1999) and Mulholland Drive, are among his production design and art direction credits (2001).
For his work on There Will Be Blood, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction. At the 88th Academy Awards, he was nominated for his second Oscar for the movie The Revenant.
Fisk played the Man in the Planet in David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977), and Sissy Spacek and him are given “special appreciation” in the movie’s credits (who reputedly held the slates between takes).
Raggedy Man (1981), his first picture as a director, was followed by Fisk’s work on Violets Are Blue (1986), Daddy’s Dyin’: Who’s Got the Will? (1990), Final Verdict (1991), and two episodes of the On the Air television series (1992).
Spacek played the haughty and distant Caril Ann Fugate in Terrence Malick’s 1973 picture Badlands, where Fisk first met his wife. Their wedding day was April 12, 1974. They have two daughters: Madison Fisk, a painter, was born in 1988, and Schuyler Fisk, an actor, was born in 1982.
