Sanford’s first acting role was as Tillie in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and she made her debut on stage in On Strivers Row at the American Negro Theater in 1946. (1967). As the youngest of seven children, Isabel Sanford was the only one to survive childhood after being born in New York’s Harlem neighborhood. When she was a kid, Isabel’s dream was to be an actress. Her mother disapproved, so she had to sneak out of the house to pursue a career as a nightclub singer. However, she eventually gave up her hobbies and became a cleaning woman, despite placing third in an amateur contest at the historic Apollo Theatre in Harlem. After finishing high school, she moved to Harlem and became involved with the American Negro Theatre. Was also involved with the nearby Star Players theater group.

As a result of her divorce from her husband in 1960, Sanford moved to California with her three children. The house painter William Edward “Sonny” Richmond was married to Sanford. Richmond was killed in a fight not long after their arrival. Sanford was a Democrat, and in 1988 he campaigned for Jesse Jackson’s presidency alongside Dennis Weaver.

Actress Tallulah Bankhead approached her shortly after her arrival and urged her to join the national production of Here Today. It was in James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner that she made her Broadway debut in 1965. Her performance in this part led to her being considered for the lead in the eponymous film in 1967.

She had a minor part in the 1996 action picture Original Gangstas, which starred blaxploitation legends Fred Williamson, Pam Grier, Jim Brown, and Richard Roundtree. As a preventative measure, Sanford had carotid artery surgery in September of 2003.

Her condition deteriorated rapidly during the next months. On July 4, 2004, a month before her 87th birthday, she was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she would pass away five days later. Her publicist said that she passed away of “natural causes.” Louise “Weezy” Mills Jefferson, her character on All in the Family (1971–1975) and The Jeffersons (also on CBS), is the part for which she is most remembered (1975–1985). She won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1981, making her the first and only African-American actress to do so. Later in her career, she guest starred on shows including The Young and the Restless and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990).
