About Herb Adderley
American professional football player Herbert Anthony Adderley played cornerback for the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers. He was admitted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980.
Prior to being selected by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 1961 draft, Herb Adderley was a running back for Michigan State University who was an All-Big Ten offensive talent. He faced off against future Hall of Famers Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung in the Packers’ rookie training camp, but head coach Vince Lombardi decided to try the former Spartan as a last-minute replacement for injured starting cornerback Hank Gremminger.
He started to establish himself as one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL in 1962. Adderley was an excellent one-on-one covering back who was capable of containing the other team’s best receiver. He was a great tackler as well and wasn’t afraid to help out in run support. He led the Packers’ secondary during the 1969 season, finishing the year with seven interceptions.
In the seven years between 1961 and 1967, Adderley played for the Packers and won five NFL Championships, but only weeks before the 1970 campaign, he was transferred to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for two players. He continued to stop the finest receivers in the game while also assisting the Cowboys in two of their three Super Bowl appearances.
When the Packers and Oakland Raiders squared off in Super Bowl II on January 14, 1968, it could have been his greatest moment as an NFL player. When Adderley intercepted a Daryle Lamonica pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown, he became the first player in Super Bowl history to score a defensive touchdown.
He participated in 164 regular season games before retiring at the end of the 1972 season. He had 48 interceptions during his career, 1,046 yards of return, and 7 scores. He served as a special teams player as well, returning kickoffs 120 times for 3,080 yards and two scores.
