Henry Ford was an American manufacturer and commercial tycoon who lived from July 30, 1863, to April 7, 1947. His estimated net worth was $230 billion. One of the most well-known names in American business is perhaps Henry Ford, who revolutionized transportation and created contentious workplaces. One of the most revered figures of American individualism and enterprise is Henry Ford.
Many people believe he was the one who created the auto vehicle, but he wasn’t. He undoubtedly created, or at the very least, perfected, the continuous assembly line for mass production. Ford’s Combative Interaction with Labor Unions
If Ford was well-known for the continuous assembly line, he was also well-known for the Five Dollar Day, which he established in 1914 and which helped to establish Ford as a role model for the progressive businessman. The Five Dollar Day had a dark side, which Ford referred to as his sociological department. Workers had to submit to a kind of Big Brother surveillance in exchange for that $5 day, which prompted criticism from other people as well as other workers who saw it as a form of control by the benevolent ruler. Ford, nonetheless, had great success with the $5 day. It aided him in both hiring new employees and maintaining labor harmony in his enterprises.
However, all changed in 1919 with the end of the First World Fighting, when the immense industrial boom caused by the war gave way to a recession. Wages were cut and men were fired. Following that, Ford’s behavior toward his employees become more antagonistic. The United Auto Workers started organizing the auto plants in the 1930s as a part of the CIO, but not Ford. Ford resisted until the very last. However, agreements with the United Auto Workers were finally struck by Ford as well. Executives started to perceive him as a more aloof and, in some ways, broken man.
Ford’s legacy is one that romanticizes the American Dream.
In his latter years, he invested a significant portion of his wealth and a significant amount of his time on creating Greenfield Village, a sort of miniature Disney version of the small-town America from the 19th century that he was born into and, in some respects, still maintained mentally. There is something extremely artificial about it, but it yet embodies the notion of the small-town garage mechanic who succeeds in the big city for Ford and possibly many other Americans.
