About Hank Stram

Football coach Henry Louis Stram was from the United States. He is best remembered for his 15-year run with the American Football League’s Dallas Texans and National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs. More than any other coach in the history of the league, Stram has won three AFL championships.

American football coach Hank Stram had an inflation-adjusted net worth of $3 million dollars at the time of his death, in 2005. Stram never had an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, or special teams coach during his career with the Texans and Chiefs.

Hank Stram, the team’s head coach and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was recognized as a superb talent judge and an innovator on both sides of the ball. He created formations like the two tight end offense and the stack defense, and he was the first to use a movable pocket to help his dynamic quarterback, Len Dawson, perform to his full potential.

In 1942, 1946, and 1947, Stram was a running back at Purdue. From 1948 to 1955, he worked as an assistant coach with the Boilermakers before starting his own coaching business. He was appointed by Lamar Hunt as the first head coach of the American Football League’s Dallas Texans in 1959. Before moving to Kansas City in 1963 and changing their identity to the Chiefs, the Texans went on to win the AFL championship in 1962.

Only Stram has led his club to two Super Bowls in AFL history. In Super Bowl I, he was defeated by the Green Bay Packers, but in Super Bowl IV, the Chiefs upset the strongly fancied Minnesota Vikings in what may have been his finest hour as a head coach.

While Stram won more AFL championships than any other coach, his Texans/Chiefs won more games than any other AFL team. He coached the Texans/Chiefs (1960–1974), the New Orleans Saints (1976–1977), and other teams for 17 seasons, compiling a regular-season record of 131–97–10 and a postseason record of 5–3.
