Believe the Hype
Greg Oden is essentially the poster kid for the NBA Draft age restriction. One of the first basketball players to become well-known all around the world before graduating from high school; if allowed to enter the 2006 draft, he would have been a top pick.
Instead, he and Mike Conley Jr., a buddy from high school, played their games at Ohio State. Oden had surgery on his right wrist in June 2006 and played a large chunk of his lone collegiate season favoring his dominant hand, which makes his statistics as a Buckeye — 15.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per game — even more amazing.
Sadly, Oden’s ability to bounce back from injuries would become a trademark.
Conley, Oden, and the Buckeyes would make it all the way to the national championship game, where Joakim Noah, Al Horford, and the Florida Gators would win it for them.
(2007) Draft
One concern that was on the minds of all NBA fans as the draft date drew near was whether to select the imposing center Oden first overall. Or do you select Kevin Durant, who will likely win the scoring title? The popular wisdom, “always draft the big man” ultimately prevailed. The Portland Trail Blazers selected Oden with the first overall choice, and Seattle selected Durant with the second pick.
Postponed Debut
Just a few weeks before the start of his rookie season, in September 2007, Oden noticed some swelling in his right knee. Days later, the startling news arrived: Oden would miss the whole 2007–2008 season after a straightforward exploratory procedure had turned into microfracture surgery.
He made his NBA debut a year later than anticipated, but it was met with a lot of excitement and hope. Oden was regarded by many experts as a potential 2008–2009 candidate for rookie of the year. Oden, like many other big men, battled to adapt to the NBA game and only sometimes displayed the talent that earned him the top overall pick. He spent the majority of the year in a platoon with veteran center Joel Przybilla due to his inconsistent play and nagging foot and knee problems.
Another Setback
Oden entered the 2009–10 season in the best physical shape of his professional career and was just beginning to post the kinds of performances NBA fans were expecting. He had one year of NBA experience under his belt. He dominated the paint against Miami on December 1, 2009, pulling down 20 rebounds and blocking four shots in just 30 minutes of action. Sadly, that would be his final game in which he played the entire game.
On December 4th, Houston’s Aaron Brooks fired a shot that Oden attempted to stop before falling to the ground. Testing found a fracture in his left patella, necessitating surgery and keeping him out for the remainder of the 2009–10 season.
Scouting Report
Oden is an authentic center from the past. On offense, he plays with his back to the basket, and on defense, he has the wingspan, jumping ability, and strength to control the paint. He has no desire to float out to the three-point arc. When healthy, he’ll rank among the league’s top shot-blockers and rebounders, but his offensive game is currently more developed on the defensive end. His best offensive play is the put-back.
His injury history is obviously a big worry. His one and only season at Ohio State was ruined by wrist surgery; he also missed the most of the 2007–08 and 2009–10 seasons due to knee injuries. He missed more than 20 games even in 2008–09, his healthiest season as a professional.
Sadly, his name is already beginning to be linked to those of Ralph Sampson and Sam Bowie—other potential big guys who, as a result of injuries, never lived up to their early promise.

After participating in the CBA during their 2015–16 season, Oden declared in 2016 that he was done playing basketball and would not be re-signing.
