Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, a former Soviet politician who was born on March 2, 1931, is thought to be worth $8 million. One of the most important individuals in 20th-century history, Mikhail Gorbachev dismantled the iron wall and oversaw the peaceful transformation of the Soviet Union into modern Russia.
Gorbachev was born on March 2nd, 1931, to a family of peasant farmers in the Russian province of Stavropol.
At age 14, Gorbachev joined the Komsomol, the Communist party’s youth section. He was a talented student who graduated from Moscow State University with a law degree. There, he met Raisa Titorenko, a fellow student, whom he eventually married. Irina was the couple’s only child, a girl.
Gorbachev joined the Communist party while he was a student. After completing his studies, he and his wife moved to Stavropol, where he accepted a position with the Komsomol.
The Rise of Mikhail Gorbachev to Power
He rose through the ranks of the Communist party in a short period of time to become the regional secretary of the Komsomol.
He was elected to the party’s Central Committee in 1971, and in 1980 he was elected as the youngest full member of the Politburo, where he quickly earned the respect of Yuri Andropov, the future leader of the Soviet Union.
Many believed Gorbachev’s time had come when Andropov passed away in February 1984 after only 15 months in government, but Konstantin Chernenko was appointed party head instead. Again, his term was brief because he passed away before the end of his term. At this juncture, Gorbachev was encouraged by the need to select a younger leader to the position of general secretary and rose to prominence on the international scene.
A new age of reform was ushered in under Gorbachev’s direction.
Citizens started to be allowed to exercise several freedoms that were previously restricted, including limited criticism. The Soviet occupation of Afghanistan came to an end, and two terms that will always be linked to Gorbachev entered the English language. The first stood for “openness,” and the second for “economic reform,” respectively, was “Perestroika.”
Relationship between Mikhail Gorbachev and the United States
Gorbachev’s relationship with the United States, particularly the agreements to lower their nuclear arsenals, was one of the most prominent aspects of his leadership. Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his efforts in foreign affairs.
Without the guarantee of Soviet military support, appeals for democracy in Eastern Europe had become insurmountable by 1989, and their governments toppled one after another.
In August 1991, there was an unsuccessful coup attempt due to internal strife in the Soviet Union. On Christmas Day 1991, Gorbachev was forced to step down as president due to internal difficulties, and the Soviet Union officially disintegrated the next day. Despite having a considerably lower profile after leaving power, Gorbachev has continued to be well-known and has even made an effort to return to active politics. He is without a doubt one of the most significant world leaders of the 20th Century, notwithstanding his failure.
