Eugene Thurman Upshaw Jr., also known as “Uptown Gene” and “Highway 63”, was an American professional football player for the Oakland Raiders of the American Football League and later the National Football League.
Upshaw attended Robstown High School and was raised in Robstown, Texas. He was a member of the fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha while playing collegiate football at Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville). Upshaw married Jimmye Lee Hill-Upshaw (née Hill) at the age of 22 in 1967. They got divorced after having one son together, Eugene Upshaw III.
