About Gale Sayers
Sayers became the youngest member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he was inducted in 1977 at the age of 34. He is one of four Super Bowl era players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame without ever taking part in a postseason match. The only player on the team who played both halfback and kick returner, he was selected for the NFL’s 75th Anniversary Team.
Sayers, known as the “Kansas Comet” played college football for the University of Kansas’ Kansas Jayhawks team. He amassed 4,020 all-purpose yards during his three seasons there and was twice selected a consensus All-American. Sayers won the NFL Rookie of the Year award after setting a league record in his rookie season, scoring 22 touchdowns, including a record-tying six in one game, and gaining 2,272 all-purpose yards.
He was included on the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2019. Sayers was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame the same year for his accomplishments while a student. Both the Bears and the University of Kansas have retired his number. After retiring from the NFL, Sayers started a career in business and sports administration. From 1976 to 1981, he was the athletic director at Southern Illinois University.

The Chicago Bears’ elusive running back Gale Sayers is best remembered for having a career that was cut short by knee injuries. He was also one of the NFL’s most charismatic return players in history.
Best Season: Gale Sayers, widely known as the Kansas Rocket, made his NFL debut in 1965 and set a rookie record with 22 touchdowns. However, his 1966 campaign, in which he ran for 1,231 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games, may have been his best season statistically. In addition, he gained 447 yards receiving and ran for an average of 5.2 yards.
