Football player and coach Frederick Douglass “Fritz” Pollard was from the United States. He was the National Football League’s first African American head coach. The first two African Americans to play in the NFL were Pollard and Bobby Marshall in 1920.

Notoriety: In the inaugural season of the NFL, Fritz Pollard was one of only two black players and the league’s first African American head coach. Pollard established the Chicago Black Hawks, an all-African American club that competed against white teams in the Chicago region and on the West Coast, in 1928.
