About Fred Taylor
Florida’s Pahokee is where Taylor was born. He played excellent high school football for the Glades Central Raiders while attending Glades Central High School in Belle Glade, Florida. He earned a letter in track as well. Taylor started out as a linebacker before deciding to play running back as a junior.
He ran for 1,700 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior, including a 301-yard performance that included five scores. He was awarded “Super Senior” and all-state recognition in Florida. Taylor was named one of the “100 Greatest Players of the First 100 Years” of Florida high school football by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) in 2007, 13 years after he completed high school.
Taylor’s agent, William “Tank” Black, was accused of embezzling virtually all of Taylor’s $5 million signing bonus—the sole guaranteed sum in his rookie contract—after it was claimed that Black had taken between $12 million and $14 million from athletes he had represented.
He was an All-American college football player for the University of Florida. Taylor played for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots before being selected by the Jaguars with the ninth overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. Taylor belongs to the 10,000-yard club for rushing.
On September 2, 2011, Taylor publicly announced his retirement from the Jaguars, the franchise that had selected him ninth overall in the 1998 draft.
Taylor will be the second player inducted into the Pride of the Jaguars, the Jaguars announced on June 7, 2012.
On September 30, during the team’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he was formally inducted.
