About Fred Biletnikoff
Frederick S. Biletnikoff is a former gridiron football player and coach. Biletnikoff, the son of Natalie (Karuba) and Ephriam Biletnikoff, was born and reared in Erie, Pennsylvania. His four grandparents were all immigrants from Russia. Biletnikoff was a student at Technical Memorial High School in Erie, which is now Erie High School and whose sporting field bears his name. Biletnikoff excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track in high school. He won All-City recognition in baseball and basketball in addition to being a champion high jumper. In the middle of the 1960s, Bob, his younger brother, started at quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes.
Biletnikoff played college football for the Florida State Seminoles team while a student at Florida State University. As a senior, he led the nation in receiving yards and touchdowns, earning him unanimous All-America accolades. He is remembered by the Biletnikoff Award, which is given each year to the best receiver in NCAA Division I FBS.
During his fourteen seasons playing wide receiver with the Oakland Raiders in the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL), he also served as the team’s assistant coach. After the 1978 NFL season, he announced his retirement. In 1980, he played for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Biletnikoff was one of the most sure-handed and reliable receivers of his day, with a penchant for making spectacular receptions, yet lacking the breakaway speed to be a deep-play threat. He was also renowned for his precise, fluid pass routes. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988 and the College Football Hall of Fame in the same year (1991).
