About Flint “Scotty” Schulhofer
Thoroughbred racehorse trainer Flint S. “Scotty” Schulhofer (May 30, 1926 – December 14, 2006) had an estimated net worth of $10 million. After a battle with cancer, Hall of Fame trainer Flint “Scotty” Schulhofer passed away on December 14, 2006, in Florida. He was 80 years old. His wife Stephanie, daughters Susan Kleinbub and Margaret Rapp, and son Randy, a former trainer, all survive him. Jordan, Haley and Thomas Rapp, Miranda Steadman, Isabelle Kleinbub, Scott and Evan Schulhofer, and Miranda Steadman were among Schulhofer’s seven grandchildren.
Instructing champions:
Seven Eclipse Awards were won by six champions Schulhofer trained, including Lemon Drop Kid, champion older male in 2000. Lemon Drop Kid was, in Schulhofer’s opinion, the best horse he ever trained. Under Schulhofer, Fly So Free, Mac Diarmida, Rubiano, Smile, and Ta Wee all won championships. For Schulhofer, Colonial Affair won several Grade 1 contests, such as the 1993 Belmont Stakes, which saw Julie Krone become the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown contest. Additionally, he was the trainer of the tragic Exogenous, who perished in a horrible accident on the day of the 2001 Breeders’ Cup.
Retired Hall of Famer:
In 1992, Schulhofer was admitted into the Hall of Fame for Thoroughbred Racing. After riding as a steeplechase jockey from 1950 to 1962, he started his training career. After 7,157 starts and 1,119 victories, he ended his career in 2001. His horses brought in $52,245,076 in winnings.
Second World War veteran:
Schulhofer served in the German troops on the front lines of World War II after serving for trainer Oleg Dubassoff. Before going back to work for Dubassoff, he spent two years at The Citadel studying pre-medicine. When John Nerud left Tartan Farms, Schulhofer started his training, and in 1972 he established a public stable.
Jose Santos, a regular rider, comments:
On a number of champions, including Fly So Free, Lemon Drop Kid, and Rubiano, jockey Jose Santos partnered with Schulhofer. Santos acknowledged that the passing of Schulhofer “It definitely hurts,” “Scotty and I got along really well when I first arrived in New York in 1985. He placed me on several winners. He was a brilliant horseman and had a heart of gold. He always told you the truth and gave you a clear picture of the situation. My sympathies go out to his family.”
A Lasting Legacy:
Since his retirement, Schulhofer had been breeding horses, and on the day of his death, Commodore Way, a horse he bred out of Chloe, a mare he had coached while she was competing, won the sixth race at Aqueduct.
Flint Schulhofer’s wealth was $10 million at the time of his passing in 2006. Schulhofer ended his career as a trainer in 2002, but he continued to work as a breeder. At the time of his passing on December 14, 2006, he was residing in Hollywood, Florida.
