Fidel Castro, also known as Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (13 August 1926 – 25 November 2016), was a politician and revolutionary from Cuba who held the position of Prime Minister. Fidel Castro, real name Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, ruled Cuba as a tyrant for almost 50 years. Castro was the illegitimate child of a wealthy sugar plantation owner and his maid. He was born on August 13, 1926, in the Oriente province in the southeast of Cuba. After his father wed his mother, he adopted Fidel as a son and gave him the last name Castro.
Castro attended Catholic institutions as a young man before enrolling in the University of Havana’s law program in 1945. Castro began to show an interest in politics about this period. Castro began his legal career after earning his law degree. Castro wed Mirta Diaz Balart, a classmate of his at the University of Havana, in 1948. Seven years after having one child together, the couple got divorced. Castro started dating Dalia Soto del Valle in 1961, and they had five additional children together. In 1980, Castro and Dalia got hitched.
Fidel Castro and Batista
The unscrupulous actions of the Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista, who had seized power in a coup in 1952, deeply troubled Fidel Castro. Castro initially tried to remove Batista through the legal system in his capacity as a lawyer, but he failed.
Castro tried to use force after being unable to remove Batista from Cuba by lawful methods.
Castro attacked the Moncada Barracks in an effort to stage a coup in 1953; nevertheless, Castro was caught and imprisoned for two years.
Castro’s role in the Cuban Revolution
Castro arrived in Cuba in December 1956 after spending the following couple years recruiting and preparing revolutionaries in Mexico. Castro and his followers engaged in guerilla warfare for two years before finally seizing power in January 1959. Cuba saw rapid transition under Castro, becoming a communist state. Then, he continued to alienate the United States from Cuba while forging close connections with the Soviet Union. Due to the radical measures being adopted, the US eventually took the lead in enforcing a trade embargo on Cuba.

Castro ruled Cuba as a dictator for the next nearly 50 years, improving the lives of Cubans in terms of health care and education but at the expense of their freedom of expression, their right to practice their religion, and their access to human rights.
He is also accused of exacting harsh retaliation against anyone who expressed opposition to his regime.
