Arnold George Dorsey was born in Madras, British India as one of ten children to British Army NCO Mervyn Dorsey, in 1936. By the early 1950s, he had begun to play saxophone in nightclubs but it wasn’t until his impression of Jerry Lewis prompted friends to begin calling him “Gerry Dorsey”, a name that he worked under for almost a decade.

Three of his singles became some the best-selling of the 1960s in the United Kingdom.
