About Elijah Cummings
Elijah Eugene Cummings was an American civil rights advocate, activist, occasional author, and politician. He is known for being a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and US House of Representatives from the 39th and 7th districts, respectively. Prior to his passing in October 2019, Cummings proceeded Trey Gowdy and served as the Chair of the House Oversight Committee for nine months.
Elijah Cummings became famous when he joined the U.S. House of Representatives in the early 1980s. He was born on January 18, 1951, in Baltimore, Maryland. He’s the third of seven children of Robert and Ruth Cummings, a couple of sharecroppers. He became interested in politics at a very young age. When he was eleven, alongside his friends, he worked to integrate a South Baltimore-based swimming pool that was segregated.
In his teenage years, Cummings was passionate about studying. He attended the Baltimore City College high school, from which he graduated in 1969. He then enrolled at the Howard University in Washington D.C. There, he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and he served as a sophomore class president and student government president/treasurer. In 1973, after his graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in political science, he moved on to the University of Maryland School of Law.
What made the politician so rich were both his political campaigns and four-decades-long career. In 1976, Elijah received his Juris Doctor from the Maryland University and, in just a few months later was admitted to the bar in Maryland. He spent nearly 19 years practicing law before he was elected to enter the House of Representatives in the 1996 elections.
In January 1983, he officially entered the Maryland House of Delegates. He succeeded Lena King Lee who campaigned and raised funds for him. After launching his political career, Cummings became a millionaire. Besides earning a lot of money for his work, he also made a lot of history. In the Maryland General Assembly, while being the Chairman of the well-known Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, he also became the first African-American to be in such position. He also became the first African-American to be named the Speaker Pro Tempore (the House of Delegates’ second-highest position).

Among some of these are the University of Maryland’s Law School Board of Advisors and SEED Schools of Maryland’s Board of Directors. Apart from these, the Congressman was a writer of the biweekly column of the newspaper Baltimore Afro-American and an honorary member of the Baltimore Zoo Board of Trustees.

After spending nearly 13 years as the member of the Maryland House of Delegates from its 39th district, the Democratic politician won the 1996 elections and became a member of the Maryland’s 7th congressional district.
