About Edwin Valero

Venezuelan professional boxer Edwin Valero competed from 2002 until 2010. On April 18, 2010, Valero allegedly confessed to killing his wife to hotel security and the police. On April 19, 2010, at 1:30 am, Valero was declared legally dead after being discovered hanging in his cell the day after being arrested.

Venezuelan professional boxer Edwin Valero had an estimated net worth of $6 million dollars at the time of his death, in 2010.

Valero held the WBA super featherweight championship from 2006 to 2008 and the WBC lightweight championship from 2009 to 2010. He was an undefeated former world champion in both weight classes.

I recently discovered myself rewatching some of former world champion Edwin Valero of Venezuela’s earlier matches, and in particular, one amazing documentary that really captures the inner workings of his boxing career.

In 2010, after being detained on suspicion of killing his wife, he ended his life in sad and violent circumstances by committing suicide.

He was an amazing puncher with enough force in his fists to worry anyone, and his turbulent life outside the ring served as somewhat of a metaphor for his vicious fists inside it.

He held WBC belts in both weight classes and was a two-weight world champion in the super-featherweight and lightweight divisions. However, it is likely his record that will live on in legend.

He continues to be the only WBC champion in history to have won every fight through knockout.

When you consider his entire fighting career, in which he terrorized opponents on route to collecting a professional record of 27-0 (27KO) between 2002 and 2010, this is a tremendous statistic.

When I review Edwin’s fights, I am often left wondering what may have been. He truly possessed a unique gift.

Legendary tales of his sparring partners being eliminated day after day, forcing seasoned professionals to withdraw, give up, or not show up the following day, are told.

Few could even tolerate him during sparring, and many fighters complained of excruciating agony in their elbows and arms.

That represents true power.

Any boxer would find it terrifying to face a man who was capable of injuring areas of the body that typically serve as a shield against strikes to the head and torso.

His career also didn’t go as planned, and he had to deal with numerous outside-the-ring problems that periodically prevented him from fighting.

Early in his career, he had to fight outside of the US due to complications from a previous motorcycle accident that appeared during an MRI scan in New York, which he failed.

That didn’t stop him, though, and he carried on despite the fact that difficulties outside the ring were never far away.

Throughout his career, Valero was accused of assault several times, and when his wife was once taken to the hospital with a damaged lung, the physicians had questions about the cause of the injuries.

However, his fierce demeanor made him an irresistible force in the ring, and at one point near the end, Manny Pacquiao was mentioned as a possible opponent.

What kind of match would that be?

Of their generation, two of the possibly most explosive fighters at lighter weights ever.

Fireworks would have undoubtedly been produced between two southpaws who enjoyed going toe to toe.

However, someone with Valero’s strength would have caused any lightweight in history trouble, even someone of Pacquiao’s caliber. For pure boxing abilities, you’d definitely have to give the advantage to Pacquiao, who undoubtedly would have had an amazing game plan from Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach.

He was only 28 years old when he passed away, just entering the height of his noble art talents and the prime of his profession.

Sadly, we’ll never truly know how effective a combatant he could have been.

Fans of boxing won’t forget him, that much is certain.

He might have one of the sport’s all-time hardest punches, pound for pound.
