About Eddy Arnold
Richard Edward Arnold (May 15, 1918 – May 8, 2008) was an American country music singer with an estimated net worth of $40 million. He came from a family of farmers in Tennessee, and he is said to have taken early inspiration from Gene Autry and Bing Crosby. Later he would travel between those two styles in his future musical career.
He sold more than 85 million records. Eddy Arnold transcended different musical tastes in country, serving as a role model for future musicians with both his music and his scrupulously moral personal life. A member of the Grand Ole Opry (from 1943) and the Country Music Hall of Fame (since 1966), Arnold ranked 22nd on Country Music Television’s 2003 list of “The 40 Greatest Men of Country Music.”
Arnold’s mellow voice and jazzy arrangements earned him wide appeal across the musical spectrum. He co-wrote “You Don’t Know Me,” later made famous by Ray Charles. He was the first country singer to be offered a network TV show. He had over 140 singles on the Billboard country charts.
Arnold shared a manager with Elvis, the infamous Col. Tom Parker.
His agricultural roots earned him the nickname “Tennessee Plowboy. In 2003, Arnold was ranked 22nd on Country Music Television’s list of “The 40 Greatest Men of Country Music.”
In 1943, Arnold performed regularly on Nashville’s WSM station. The attention led to a recording session with RCA. His song “That’s How Much I Love You,” ruled the country charts through the late ’40s. However Eddy Arnold later transformed his image as the Tennessee Plowboy and performed mostly in Las Vegas.
Arnold was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966. By 1985, he had sold over 80 million records. He continued to work into the 2000s, releasing After All These Years — his 100th record and last — in 2005.
After his wife of 66 years, Sally Gayhart Arnold, died two months earlier, Eddy Arnold soon followed. One week before his 90th birthday Arnold died from natural causes. At the time of his death in 2008, Eddy Arnold’s net worth was $40 million.
