Eddie Alvarez was born in Kensington, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 11, 1984.

Beginnings of wrestling
At Northeast Catholic High School, Alvarez won two National Prep All-American wrestling championships. He placed sixth in the 145-pound weight class in the National Prep School Wrestling Championships in 2000 and 2001.
Beginnings of MMA
Alvarez just spent a little over eight months training after graduating from high school before facing Anthony Ladonna in his MMA debut at Ring of Combat 5. First round victory was his.

Later on, Alvarez would reclaim the title from Chandler with a contentious split-decision triumph at Bellator 106.
Getting even with Shinya Aoki
At Bellator 66, Alvarez would defeat Aoki via first-round TKO to exact revenge for his defeat in the DREAM Lightweight Grand Prix.
Contractual Problems With Bellator and Bjorn Rebney
Early in 2013, Alvarez thought he was a free agent and planned to accept a lucrative UFC contract offer. Rebney claimed the right to match Bellator. Alvarez only participated in one competition in two years due to legal disputes.
According to reports, a significant portion of the conflict involved matching rights for a portion of the PPV revenue (obviously, the UFC makes much more money in the PPV arena than Bellator). As a result, Alvarez and his team apparently thought Bellator could not match that provision of the deal because Bellator’s share of PPV income differed significantly from the UFC’s.
