About Ed Helms
He appeared on The Office as the singing Cornell grad before joining the guys for a night of drinking in The Hangover. Since his roles in The Office and The Hangover launched him onto the comedy scene, he has established himself as a top comic of the future. With a number of songs under his belt, Ed Helms’ potential as a star is now rapidly materializing.
Getting his voice out
Georgia’s Atlanta is where Edward Paul Helms was born. In high school, he was drawn to the performing arts and played guitar in several local bands. However, he kept his ambitions to become a comedian hidden until he enrolled in Oberlin College. Helms majored in geology when he first entered Oberlin, and he graduated with a degree in film and some valuable improv training.
From Tech Nerd To The Nard-Dog
For four years, Helms entertained viewers while co-hosting The Daily Show with future megastars Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. While there, he developed a tiny fan base and appeared in several memorable episodes before departing in 2006 to explore other chances. In The Office, one of the most well-known sitcoms on television, Helms joined Carell at a small paper firm called Dunder Mifflin after landing guest starring parts on shows like Arrested Development. Helms’ goofy yet endearing Andy Bernard character was a nice addition to the already enormously popular show.
Helms won the SAG Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance in 2007 and made the jump to the big screen when he played the lead in Steve Carell’s comedy Evan Almighty.
Semi-Pro and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story were his next films, but his big break came in 2009 when Todd Phillips hired him in the hugely successful bachelor party film The Hangover. The film, starring Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ken Jeong, made $467 million worldwide. As a result of Helms’ extraordinary performance, the movie won the 2010 Golden Globe for Best Picture.
When he starred in the critically acclaimed comedy Cedar Rapids, Helms accomplished another major feat in 2011.
Not-So-Lonesome Love Life
Helms is very private about his personal life, despite the fact that his Office character loves to brag about his dates to anyone who will listen. On Conan, he recently acknowledged having a girlfriend, but he hasn’t revealed who she is. Regarding his devotion to his bluegrass band Lonesome Trio, Helms is much more outspoken. Although the band will always be a side activity for Helms, he enjoys the chance to perform with his old college friends whenever his hectic schedule permits.
“Most actors, I think, subscribe to the philosophy that dignity really doesn’t have a place on the film set…Especially in comedy. Dignity is the enemy.”
