Finding His Voice
Edward Paul Helms was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He gravitated towards the arts in high school, where he performed in school plays and played the guitar in local bands, but he kept his comedy dreams hush-hush until he enrolled in Oberlin College. Helms arrived at Oberlin as a geology major, and left with a film degree and some crucial improv experience.
From Tech Nerd To The Nard-Dog
Helms cracked up audiences on The Daily Show for four years, appearing alongside future mega-stars Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. He gained a small fan base and starred in a number of popular segments during his stint, but left in 2006 to pursue other opportunities. After landing guest starring roles on shows like Arrested Development, Helms went to work for his former colleague Carell at a little paper company called Dunder Mifflin on The Office, one of the most popular sitcoms in television. Helms’ character, the goofy yet loveable Andy Bernard, was a welcome addition to the already wildly successful show.
In 2007, Helms took home a SAG award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance, and transitioned to the big screen when he starred in Carell’s big screen comedy Evan Almighty. He followed up with Semi-Pro and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, but his true big break came in 2009 when Todd Phillips cast him in the blockbuster bachelor party hit The Hangover. Alongside Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ken Jeong the movie was a huge success, grossing $467 million. Helms’ outrageous performance garnered rave reviews, and the film took home the 2010 Golden Globe for Best Picture. Helms reached another milestone in 2011 when he headlined the critical hit comedy Cedar Rapids.
Not-So-Lonesome Love Life
Though his Office character loves to dish about his dating conquests to anyone who will listen, Helms himself is actually very tight-lipped about his own personal life. He recently admitted to having a girlfriend on Conan, but has remained quiet about her identity. Helms is much more open about his love for his bluegrass band Lonesome Trio. The band will always be a side project, but Helms relishes the opportunity to play with his old college buddies whenever his jam packed schedule allows for it.
Defining Quote “Most actors, I think, subscribe to the philosophy that dignity really doesn’t have a place on the film set…Especially in comedy. Dignity is the enemy.”
