About Dr. Mehmet Oz
First being given a platform by Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Mehmet Oz is a television personality, surgeon, professor, and writer who is best known for his TV show, The Dr. Oz Show. The doctor is best known for promoting pseudoscience and alternative medicine. Oz has found himself in several controversies, as he has been known to endorse unproven products and has been scrutinized by physicians and government officials.
It is estimated, that Dr. Oz has earned income equal to a salary of $9-20 million dollars per year since 2019. Not including his investment growth or the equity appreciation of his businesses.
In the past 20 years, Oz has made millions from these endorsements as well as his appearances on TV, and from his best selling self-help books. Most recently, Oz has been appointed to the Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition by president Donald Trump.
Oz has been a cardiovascular surgeon ever since the 90s and became a professor at the Department of Surgery at Columbia University in 2001. It was around this time when the doctor started appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show and since then, he has appeared alongside Oprah on TV more than 120 times, being the show’s resident health expert.
It was Oprah who helped get Dr. Oz his own show, as her production company Harpo Productions produced The Dr. Oz Show in 2009. On the show, Oz mainly focuses on issues such as Type 2 diabetes and endorses several anti-aging products.
But his success in TV didn’t end there, as he hosted the follow up show, Transplant, and featured on Oprah’s Allstars, in which he spoke about life, health, and finance alongside Suze Orman and Dr. Phil. Surgeon Oz, a special that premiered on OWN, showcased Oz’s professional career as a surgeon before he started in the entertainment industry.
Most recently, Jordan Peterson sat down with Oz on multiple occasions on OzTalks, in which the two doctors discussed their professions and life for close to six hours. Oz is also extremely present behind the scenes, as he was the medical director for Denzel Washington’s movie, John Q.
Outside of television, Oz has been found to be a massively popular writer, as eight of his books have become New York Times bestsellers, and he has even had regular columns in not just one magazine, but several, including Esquire, O, and The Oprah Magazine.
After this success, Oz even had his own magazine, Dr. Oz – The Good Life, which was released bi-monthly with the Hearst Corporation. In 2009, the personality was awarded the National Magazine Award for Personal Service, which was owed to the article, Retool, Reboot, and Rebuild.
However, Oz’s fame isn’t all positive, as he has found himself in a string of controversies throughout most of his career. In 2016, the special guest on The Dr. Oz Show was none other than Donald Trump, who would be given an assessment on the show. This caused a huge amount of backlash as news outlets believed the president was just trying to appeal to the female demographic who watches the show.
Two years later, Trump then appointed Oz to the Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, which was a decision that was again criticized, as Trump was choosing celebrities instead of experts in the field. This claim was backed up when he also appointed former The Incredible Hulk star Lou Ferrigno.
Oz’s TV show produced by Harpo Productions, The Dr. Oz Show, has kept Oz busy for more than 10 years and it has been picked up for yet another season. Though it isn’t clear exactly how much Oz’s yearly salary is for presenting, the show brings in about 3.5 million viewers per day, meaning that the show is highly lucrative and that he could be earning a salary as high as seven figures.
While many of his concepts are considered controversial he has built an audience and that has been the base of his growing wealth. On top of his TV work, he often takes the show on tour, as he regularly conducts live events and workshops, which attracts hoards of people and masses of fans.
Besides TV, his writing has also helped Oz earn tens of millions of dollars. Oz’s book series, You, has sold more than nine million copies, with You: The Owner’s Manual, You: The Smart Patient, and You: On A Diet, being the most successful. Though it might not be known how much Oz made from the sales of the books, it is estimated that he was paid an estimated $7 million just as an advance.
The writer also co-founded Sharecare, an online health platform that has a yearly revenue of an estimated $400 million. And finally, the TV personality also has a great real estate portfolio, as his most lucrative purchase was an estimated $18 million Palm Beach mansion that was originally on the market for an estimated $30 million.
The Sharecare company that Dr. Mehmet Oz founded with Jeff Arnold, expects revenue to grow by 24% at a compound annual growth rate over the next three years. Projecting it to reach $629 million by 2023.
Oz was no older than seven when he first chose the profession he wanted to work in, being inspired by his father, who was also a surgeon. From that point on, Oz applied himself and he graduated from some of the most prestigious colleges in the United States.
He graduated from Harvard University, and then earned his MBA from The Wharton School, and then his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
His skills in the field were unmatched and he became a specialist when it came to heart transplants, but his path changed when he encountered a family who would not allow a blood transfusion due to their religious beliefs.
This upset Oz and led him to become invested in alternative treatments and pseudoscience, which is what he has based most of his entertainment profession around and has been able to make an impact upon millions of lives in doing so. However, there have been arguments on both sides.
Last but not least, it’s his affiliation with Oprah Winfrey that has benefited him the most in his career, as it was her who gave him the biggest platform he had ever seen when appearing on her show. And after his popularity rose exponentially, it was Oprah that extended all of these TV offers to the doctor, including The Dr. Oz Show, which has won three Emmy Awards since its inception and holds several daytime TV ratings records.
With his seasoned background in cardiovascular surgery and his unorthodox approach to medicine, Oz has been able to carve out his own niche and find huge success in daytime TV. Thanks to the doctor’s investments, endorsements, and extremely lucrative book deals, Dr. Mehmet Oz now has an estimated net worth of more than $250 million. As of right now, The Dr. Oz Show has been renewed for yet another season and he continues to speak about the importance of pseudoscience and the importance of well-being.
