Martial Arts History
Because his mother is a grandmaster of internal martial arts, Yen had his first martial arts training at a young age. In fact, it’s been stated that he started learning Chinese Wushu and Tai Chi as soon as he could walk. But once he stopped attending school and moved to Boston, his wushu training really took off. It’s also believed that around this time, he experimented with different techniques.
He was eventually transferred to Beijing for a two-year training program with the Beijing Wushu Team after his parents started to worry that he was hanging out with a bad crowd too frequently. The first non-PRC Chinese to be welcomed there was Yen.

Movie Initiations
Yen’s big break came when he traveled to Hong Kong on his way back to Beijing and met “The Matrix” action choreographer Yuen Wo-ping, the director of the movie. Jackie Chan‘s career was begun by Yuen with the films Drunken Master and Snake in Eagle’s Shadow. He would quickly do the same for Yen.
Shaolin Drunkard (1983) and Taoism Drunkard (1984) were his first stunt roles (1984). His first acting gig was in Drunken Tai Chi (1984). His breakthrough performance, however, was as General Nap-lan in the 1992 film Once Upon a Time in China II, in which he faced off against Jet Li.
Production Company, Choreography, and Direction
Yen founded Bullet Films, his own production company, in 1997. Later same year, in the film Legend of the Wolf, in which he also featured, he made his debut as a director.
