Hughley conceived, wrote, produced, and starred in his own family sitcom, The Hughleys, in 1998 after first breaking into the television industry as the host of Comic View on BET. Before going to UPN, where it continued to air for two more seasons before being canceled in 2002, the sitcom first aired on ABC for two seasons.
Hughley was a cast member of the well-known Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, an Aaron Sorkin-written NBC drama about the making of a comedy show. Although it only aired for one season, Hughley had the chance to show off some of his dramatic acting skills. Hughley became into a more prominent political figure after that program ended, and in 2009 he launched and hosted D.L. Hughley Breaks the News, a chat show focused on headlines for CNN. It had a brief run, much like other of Hughley’s TV endeavors.
From October 2008 until March 2009, Hughley held his own political discussion show on CNN called D.L. Hughley Breaks the News. Hughley’s show was canceled so he could spend time with his family in Los Angeles, but he still makes appearances on CNN as a talking head and journalist.
