Early Years:
Diego, just 6 years old, first displayed his talent while working out with Comercial FC in Ribeirao Preto. Diego opted to enter trials in the hopes of impressing a bigger club after switching to another team, So Carlos, when he was nine years old. At age 12, Santos took him, and he began training in the junior divisions.
The years of Santos:
Diego won the Brazilian championship in his first season after being promoted to the Santos main team at the age of 16. He shared the field with Robinho, and both were correctly predicted to have enormous futures in the game.
Moving to Porto
Diego was relocated to Europe at an early age (18), like many South Americans who excel in their native leagues, but found life at Portuguese powerhouse Porto challenging. Diego struggled to match his performance at Werder Bremen, and Juve endured one of their worst seasons in a while. Juve sold him at a loss (US$19.7 million) the following summer as a result of injuries, a formation that did not fit him, and a falling out with the then-coach Ciro Ferrara.
Diego was in the comfortable surroundings of the Bundesliga and scored on his debut against Mainz, but he was unable to recapture his prior success. Due to this and a dispute with the management, he had little chance of success and was sent on loan to Atletico Madrid at the close of the transfer window in August 2011.
