The legendary talk show host Dick Cavett grew up in Midwest Nebraska with his aunts, uncles, and grandparents. He was the son of two dedicated teachers. As Cavett once recalled to Lucille Ball, many family members were either first-generation Americans or immigrants from Scotland, Ireland, England, and, to a lesser extent, France and Germany.
When Cavett was 10 years old, his mother passed away from cancer after receiving a diagnosis after the family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. Later, his father wed once more. The Dorcas C. and Alva B. Cavett Elementary School was given its name by Cavett’s old mater, Lincoln High School.
The time Cavett spent in high school was enjoyable. He was chosen as the state president of the student council and took first place in the state gymnastics competition in Nebraska.
He directed The Winslow Boy, a Saturday morning radio program, giving him his first taste of a career in entertainment. As the title character, Cavett also acted. Additionally, he performed shows and studied magic outside of school. He was invited to the International Brotherhood of Magicians convention by his talent, where he won the Best New Performer prize. Cavett met fellow musician and eventual talk show legend Johnny Carson during his early career in magic.
Growing Your Talk Show Career
The stage fright bug hurt Cavett badly. He frequently ventured to New York City and Broadway from Yale University, where he was majoring in English. There
He would wait until actors had left the theater before approaching them and seeking information. Even backstage and in TV studios, he would sneak in to fully immerse himself in the trade. Later, Cavett switched her major, earning a degree in theater.
However, after graduating, Cavett struggled to find steady employment. He appeared as an extra on the variety show The Phil Silvers Show and in a few made-for-TV movies. Cavett wished for a great opportunity.
He was reading an article at the time about Jack Paar, who was hosting The Tonight Show at the time, and how eager he was for excellent stuff. As a copyboy for Time magazine, Cavett took breaks throughout the day to scribble a few jokes.
Cavett wandered the corridors of the RCA building where Tonight was recorded while carrying the gags. He ran into Paar and took the chance to personally give the material. A handful of the jokes were used by Paar, and they were well welcomed by the crowd. Paar invited Cavett to provide additional material after the performance. After being eventually hired on a full-time basis, he progressed to the position of talent coordinator. He played a role in Woody Allen’s discovery, in part.
Cavett remained a writer for the program after Paar left and Carson took over as host. Due to his longevity and talent, he frequently made appearances and served as a guest host.
Dick Cavett’s Show
His fame attracted ABC’s attention. The Dick Cavett Show, a late-night chat show that competed with The Tonight Show, was launched by the network after he was appointed to host This Morning. Between 1968 and 1974, the show aired.
The Dick Cavett Show was far from over, though. The show debuted on CBS in 1975, then from 1977 to 1982, it was broadcast on PBS. The Dick Cavett Show was broadcast on the USA Network for two seasons beginning in 1985, three years later, before returning to ABC. The program was canceled in 1987, but CNBC decided to bring it back in 1989. Up until 1996, the show aired for seven years. Once more, Turner Classic Movies canceled and reinstated it in 2006, where it ran for one season.
The program has long been regarded as a chat show for “thinking man’s” Cavett is regarded as a reliable and considerate interviewer who pays close attention to his guests’ responses. And long before Bill Maher and his talk shows Politically Incorrect and Real Time, he loaded his show with guests who represented different opinions.
