About Derrick Thomas
Derrick Vincent Thomas, better known by his moniker D.T., played linebacker and defensive end for the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs selected Thomas fourth overall in the 1989 NFL Draft, and he played for them for the whole of his 11-year career until his passing in 2000.

The Missouri House and Senate each stood for a moment of silence in Derrick Thomas’ honor. Former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Kenny stated, “He will be missed by football fans around the nation, but we will miss him in Kansas City for his attitude and his efforts he put forth in our community.”
Two weeks before he passed away, Thomas was involved in an auto accident that caused him to have a heart attack. Despite likely experiencing some form of paralysis, he appeared to be healing from the accident that claimed the life of his friend Michael Tellis. Many others were in a state of shock and disbelief following the awful occurrences.
Derrick Thomas joined the Chiefs in 1989 after being selected in the first round out of Alabama University. When he recorded 10 sacks as a rookie and 20 the next season, the Chiefs knew they had something special. He could single-handedly derail an attack by shattering the quarterback’s confidence because of his innate ability to get to the quarterback.
When playing against the Seattle Seahawks in 1990, Thomas’ second season in the NFL, he recorded a league-high seven sacks. Derrick had dedicated his play to his father, an Air Force pilot who tragically perished in Vietnam during a military operation ironically called Operation Linebacker II, and the game was conducted on Veterans Day.
Only six games were missed by Derrick over his 11-year career due to injuries. He recorded 524 tackles and 128 sacks over his entire career. Additionally, he ranks seventh all-time in sacks, and he even had four safeties in his career.
Derrick Thomas should have little trouble being selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame since he rates among the best linebackers and pass rushers in NFL history. In the same way that Lawrence Taylor or Dick Butkus did in their era, he instilled dread in the opponents. He was a football player and humanitarian that the residents of Kansas City could be proud of, and he will be sorely missed for both his football skills and everything that he has given back to the area.
