About Denise Richards
Before she became more well-known for her acrimonious divorce from Charlie Sheen than any professional choices, this Bond girl stripped everything off for the films Wild Things and Playboy.
The sexy sex icon has had her fair share of scandals, however typically it was her ex-husband Charlie Sheen who got her on the pages of tabloid magazines. Her name immediately brings to mind claims that she stole the spouse of Heather Locklear, exploited her children on a reality program, and, of course, her topless lesbian Wild Things scene with Neve Campbell. Although Denise was undoubtedly a wild child in her adolescence, the truth is a little murkier, and we don’t believe she stole anything or took advantage of anyone.
More than likely, she has occasionally appeared to be cannon fodder for the tabloids due of her work and relationships.
The lanky blonde moved to Oceanside, California when she was 15 years old to attend high school after being born in Downers Grove, Illinois. After graduating, she relocated to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career and started modeling there. A number of small parts in low-budget movies as well as a few guest appearances in TV series including Saved by the Bell and Married with Children were landed by the actress. But Starship Troopers, a sci-fi movie in which Denise portrayed the seductive Captain Carmen Ibanez, was released in 1997, and that was when she got her big break.
She played Kelly Van Ryan, the face of a seductive, cunning double-crosser, in the 1998 cult classic Wild Things, despite the fact that Starship Troopers was more fizzle than sizzle. This part established her as a major actor.
When she went on to portray a Bond girl in The World is Not Enough, it appeared as though she had arrived, but her lackluster performance as a smart nuclear physicist earned her a Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actress.
Following a disappointing performance, Denise gave TV sitcoms another shot by appearing on Spin City and Friends. On the production of the direct-to-video film Good Advice around that time, she ran across famed bad boy Sheen, and the two soon became a hot Hollywood couple. It appeared as though Sheen was finally putting his troubled past behind him and settling down when, despite his reputation, they were married in June 2002. Denise’s acting career was beginning to falter, so she capitalized on her position as a sex symbol by landing roles as attractive bimbos in parodies like Undercover Brother and Scary Movie 3.
When she stripped off everything for Playboy magazine in 2004, only five months after giving birth to her first daughter, Sam, she had totally accepted her image.
She has maintained her credibility with her male fans despite playing a significant role in a number of box office duds; in 2001, she ranked ninth on Maxim’s list of the 50 Sexiest Women.
Their marriage saw a rollercoaster of break-ups and reconciliations in 2005 while Denise was expecting their second daughter. As a result, she filed for divorce from Sheen that year, claiming she worried for the safety of both her children and herself. Later, Denise revealed that Sheen had allegedly threatened her life, leading her to seek a restraining order against her estranged husband.
But it would turn out that Sheen wasn’t the only one who was losing his mind in the future. Police were called to Denise’s filming location in November 2006 after she allegedly hurled two photographers’ laptops over a balcony before they struck two elderly women. No one was seriously hurt, and no charges were brought against Denise.
Keeping It Fresh
Denise Richards chose to appear in the reality series Denise Richards: It’s Complicated in 2008 because she wanted a new beginning and to prove to the world that she was a “family first” kind of gal. And in 2009, she participated in the 8th season of Dancing with the Stars, giving her girls their first opportunity to see mom perform live.
Whether it’s claims that she had an affair with Richie Sambora while he was married to her then-best friend Locklear, that she shouldn’t have let her kids watch reality TV, or that she should have avoided another of her ex’s outrageous actions, Denise continues to spark rumors and debate. However, it keeps her in the spotlight, and let’s face it—what that’s has kept her in demand.
