Who Is David Hasselhoff

He’s no stranger to being the butt-end of more than a few good-humored jokes. But whether you consider David Hasselhoff a Hollywood laughingstock or a silent genius of his own fame, this slow motion stud still has us talking.

We estimate David Hasselhoff has a net worth of about $10 million dollars, as of 2020.

The Young And The Fame Hungry

Born in Maryland, David first showed an inclination for performing when he was seven years old and was enrolled in acting, singing and dancing lessons. The stage allowed him a place free from the insecurities of his pre-adolescent self—he was a gangly, tall and thin boy who was nervous around girls.

When his family moved to California, David began auditioning for acting gigs and landed a role on the soap opera The Young and the Restless in 1975. David stayed with the soap for seven years before jumping to a different series, one that would give his career a much-needed boost, Knight Rider for four years. His role as Michael Knight with his trusty sidekick, a talking car called KITT, was a huge breakthrough for Dave, but in 1989, he landed the part that would follow his name for the rest of his career. Although Baywatch wasn’t an instant hit, it gained speed in the U.S. and internationally and soon everyone was talking about the red swimsuit-clad bunch.

David stayed with the series for 11 years while also dabbling in other projects sans sand. Not letting his early singing lessons go to waste, David became quite popular in Europe with singles like ‘Looking for Freedom’ and ‘Crazy for You.’ His overseas musical success (particularly in Germany) became something of a punchline in America.

In 2000, David landed on Broadway to star in the classic Jekyll & Hyde. In 2006, David made his transition from TV and theater to the silver screen when he appeared in Adam Sandler’s Click. That same year, David received the ultimate homage when it was announced that an Australian musical based on David’s life would hit the stage, David Hasselhoff: The Musical.

Back To Reality

And although they didn’t create a musical for him in America, they did clear a space for the tan ‘80s hunk as one of the judges on the reality show America’s Got Talent starting in 2006. But 2006 was a tumultuous year for David. His marriage to actress Pamela Bach, who he married in 1989, fell apart and quickly devolved into a war of words and a custody battle over their two teenage daughters.

The following year, he became a punchline again when a video of him drunk, shirtless, sprawled on the floor and eating a cheeseburger was leaked on the internet by his own daughter, who was reportedly fed up with his drinking. It was the beginning of a string of rumored alcohol-related hospitalizations over the course of the next two years, although Hasselhoff denied that was the cause.

But David took it all in stride even agreeing to get verbally eviscerated in one of Comedy Central’s infamous roasts. The Hoff also decided to cha-cha back into the spotlight when he appeared on the 11th season of Dancing with the Stars. But David’s childhood dance training didn’t seem to help the lead-foot dancer who was the first celebrity to be eliminated from the competition.

Ever since The Hoff donned his first pair of red swim trunks and ran across the sand to rescue a damsel in distress, he’s been a beloved cultural icon, albeit the butt of some jokes. But David’s got a sense of humor about his image that keeps him in the spotlight, no matter how dim it gets from time to time.
