About David Alan Grier
David Alan Grier, an actor and comedian, has gained widespread recognition ever since he initially achieved popularity on the 1990s sketch show In Living Color. Grier has been a successful stand-up comedian in the 2000s and has continued to create his own shows and projects, such as the 2008 Comedy Central sketch show Chocolate News. In 1955, David Alan Grier was conceived in Detroit, Michigan. He received his training at the Yale School of Drama before beginning his career on Broadway. He initially didn’t pursue a career in comedy, preferring to follow his passion of becoming a dramatic actor. After graduating from the University of Michigan, he moved on to the Yale School of Drama to earn his MFA.
For his performance in the Broadway musical The First in 1981, Grier was nominated for a Tony. For the remainder of the 1980s, he kept acting onstage and in the occasional film before a small part in a cult comedy would irrevocably alter his career.
Grier was cast in the 1988 blaxploitation parody film I’m Gonna Git You Sucka by director Keenan Ivory Wayans after making an appearance in the sketch comedy film Amazon Women on the Moon. After developing a working relationship, Wayans invited Grier to join the cast of his 1990 FOX sketch series In Living Color.
With well-known characters like Antoine Merriweather (co-host of the “Men On…” series) and Funky Finger Productions employee Clavelle, In Living Color was a major smash and made Grier a household figure. Grier stuck with the program until its cancellation in 1994.
Grier appeared in numerous movies and television shows after In Living Color was cancelled, but he never really found a place to call home. He appeared in a number of brief-lived sitcoms, such as The Preston Episodes and DAG (an acronym for the comedians’ names), as well as movies including Eddie Murphy‘s comedy Boomerang, In the Army Now, and Blankman (with co-star Damon Wayans from In Living Color).
Grier started performing as a stand-up comedian in the 2000s. He started hosting Premium Blend on Comedy Central and made an appearance on Jamie Foxx Presents Laffapalooza.
Grier recorded The Book of David: The Cult Figure’s Manifesto, a stand-up comedy special for Comedy Central, in 2003.
Grier started hosting his own Comedy Central sketch program, Chocolate News, in 2008. After only one season, the program—a made-up newscast that made fun of “urban” culture—was cancelled.
His participation in the eighth season of the ABC reality show Dancing With the Stars was revealed in 2009.
Grier worked frequently with comedian Bonnie Hunt, making appearances in both her 2000 ABC series Life With Bonnie and 2000 film Return to Me. He frequently contributed to the Comedy Central puppet comedy Crank Yankers as well as the radio call-in show Loveline.
