Early Years
Born and raised in Nebraska, Dana Altman. He went to Wilber High School and was raised in Creta. He was a two-sport letterwinner who played guard in basketball and quarterback for his high school football team, both of which earned him all-conference accolades.
He spent two years playing college basketball for Southeast Community College in Nebraska after finishing high school. He played his final two years of collegiate basketball at Eastern New Mexico, where he also completed his business degree.

Early Coaching Career
Almost immediately after earning his college degree, Altman started his coaching career. He agreed to work as an assistant coach for Western State in Colorado in 1980, a post he would hold for two years. Altman returned to his native state in 1982 to work as an assistant coach at Southeast Community College, the institution where he had previously attended.
He would accept the position of head coach at Moberly Community College after only one season at SCC. Altman will have a record of 94 victories and only 18 loses in his three years at MCC.
Altman was enlisted by Kansas State University in 1986 to serve as one of their key assistant coaches. They would eventually convince him to accept, and he would stay for three years.

Initial Big Break
Altman was given the chance to take over as the team’s head coach by the Kansas State Wildcats in 1990. He was unable to decline the offer. In his four years as Kansas State’s coach, he led the club from eighth place in the Big Eight Conference in 1991 to a berth in the NCAA tournament in 1993. That same year, he was voted the Big Eight Conference Coach of the Year.
Altman would establish a track record as a decisive coach. At K-State, his teams had a 28-13 record in contests decided by six points or less.
In Lawrence, Kansas, in 1994, he successfully coached his team to an upset victory over the No. 1-ranked Kansas Jayhawks. The club would ultimately conclude with a poor 20-14 record, which most likely influenced Altman’s decision to leave and once more change jobs.
Creighton
After the 1994-95 collegiate basketball season, Altman would agree to take a position with Nebraska’s Creighton University. He would become the school’s 14th head coach in its history. This time, he would remain for quite some time—exactly 16 years.
Altman took over a club that had a 7-22 record and gradually turned them into a basketball powerhouse. In 1995, they had a 7-19 record, followed by 14-15 in 1996, 15-15 in 1997, and 18-10 in 1998.
Altman had a reputation for being a brilliant coach, but in 2007 after accepting a job offer to lead the Arkansas Razorbacks, he shot to fame. It was said that the offer would pay $1.5 million each year for five years. Altman finished his three full seasons with the Ducks with a 73-36 record.
With an unblemished 7-0 record during his fourth season with Oregon, the Ducks won the Pac-12 conference. As a result, Oregon eventually extended his contract by three years, keeping him with the school until the 2019–20 season.
