On July 17, 1965, in Kingston Springs, Tennessee, Craig Morgan was born. At the age of 18, he entered in the Army and became an EMT. He was assigned to South Korea. Morgan competed in military singing and songwriting competitions while serving in the Army and won both times. He served as a paratrooper in the 101st and 82nd Airbourne Divisions for ten years while on active duty.
He relocated his family to Nashville after leaving the Army, where he worked performing demos. He got signed to Atlantic Records while he was recording demos, and the label is where he launched his self-titled album in 2000. Following the closure of Atlantic Records, Craig was left without a label until signing with independent Broken Bow Records in 2003.
I Love It, Craig’s debut album for Broken Bow, was released in 2003. With “Almost Home.” he scored his first Top 10 song.
With the release of My Kind of Livin’ in 2005, Craig scored his first No. 1 single with “That’s What I Love About Sunday.” The song was the most played song of 2005 by the end of the year after spending four straight weeks at the top of the charts. “Redneck Yacht Club” and “I Got You.” two fan favorites from My Kind of Livin’, were among the album’s additional tunes. The album, which has sold over 500,000 copies, also gave Morgan his first Gold album.
Late in 2006, Craig released Little Bit of Life, and the album’s title track (which peaked at No. 7) and “International Harvester,” which peaked at No. 10, both reached the Top 10. “Tough” reached No. 11 in the charts.
Craig declared his departure from Broken Bow for BNA Nashville in February 2008. That’s Why, his debut album for the label, was released in October. Another Morgan co-write, “Love Remembers,” served as the album’s lead single.
John Conlee, a friend and fellow Opry member, surprised Morgan in September 2008 as he was singing for the military at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, one of the locations he had been stationed throughout his Army career. Conlee extended an invitation to Craig to perform with the Grand Ole Opry during this unexpected visit. In response, Craig said, “Lordy, yes! I really enjoy the Grand Ole Opry! And I have to admit, I’m honored to be welcomed here.” The Opry officially welcomed him on October 25, 2008.
