About Courtney Kemp
May 4, 1977 saw the birth of American television producer and writer Courtney A. Kemp. Power, a 2014 Starz television series, was her creation. She has written episodes of The Good Wife and Beauty & the Beast, among other programs.
Kemp was raised in Westport, Connecticut, and at the age of eight she started reading college textbooks. Her father Herbert Kemp Jr. was the first African American to earn a business degree from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. One of the few African American families in Westport, the Kemp family experienced prejudice. She started reading Shakespearean plays when she was 10 years old and soon started writing her own stories. She graduated from Staples High School in 1994 before pursuing her undergraduate studies at Brown University and her PhD studies in English literature at Columbia University.
Kemp moved from Westport to Los Angeles, California, at the age of 26, where she continued to work toward her goal of becoming a television writer. There, she got her big break when she was hired as a staff writer on the popular Fox television show The Bernie Mac Show at the time. Before finally becoming more well-known for penning episodes of the CBS political drama series The Good Wife, she started penning for other television programs, including Eli Stone, Justice, and Beauty & the Beast (a 2012 adaptation of the 1987 series of the same name).
She met rapper 50 Cent and executive producer Mark Canton at a coffee shop in Los Angeles, and it was there that she got the idea for Power, which would later become the first series she ever sold and proposed. She came up with the idea of a character who would leave his life as a drug dealer in the past and go on to become a prosperous club owner and businessman, and she quickly wrote the script with 50 Cent and Canton working alongside her as executive producers. The program garnered favorable reviews and ran on the Starz network from June 7, 2014, to February 9, 2020.
Power Book II: Ghost, which debuted on September 6, 2020, is one of several spin-offs produced as a result of the success of the original series. The show’s creator and showrunner was Kemp. She entered into an agreement with Netflix in August 2021.
