About Chet Atkins

Chester Burton “Chet” Atkins (June 20, 1924 – June 30, 2001), known as “Mr. Guitar” and “The Country Gentleman”, was an American musician, occasional vocalist, songwriter, and record producer with an estimated net worth of $5 million. He was primarily known as a guitarist, but also played the fiddle and banjo and earlier the ukulele.

During his life, he received 14 Grammy Awards as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, nine Country Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year awards, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum.

American musician, occasional vocalist, songwriter, and record producer Chet Atkins had an estimated net worth of about $5 million dollars at the time of his death, in 2001. He was known as “Mr. Guitar” and “The Country Gentleman”.

Chet Atkins’s musical idol was Merle Travis, whose unique finger-picking style he heard as boy in the late 1930s on the radio. Atkins, who had already picked up the guitar and the fiddle, was a quick study.

He first found work as a session musician in Nashville, where he earned the nickname “Mr. Guitar.” He later helped discover Charley Pride. He scored his biggest solo hit with “Yakety Axe” in 1965. And pushed country music into the pop charts by inventing the Nashville Sound.

He produced records for a who’s who of greats, including Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Waylon Jennings.

Atkins began to play on WNOX in Knoxville, Tennessee, and toured the country with Johnnie & Jack. He cut his first side, “Guitar Blues,” for Bullet Records. He later worked on and off for WNOX in Springfield, Missouri, and he joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1950. He worked as a session musician with Fred Rose’s stable of talent, including Hank Williams (Atkins plays on “Cold Cold Heart”).

His major collaborations include Hank Snow, Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra, The Country All-Stars, The Nashville String Band, Jerry Reed, Merle Travis, Doc Watson, Lenny Breau, Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Suzy Bogguss, Floyd Cramer and Tommy Emmanuel.

In the 1950s, Atkins grew to the ranks of producer at RCA Victor Records, where he’d developed a relationship with Steve Sholes. In the 1950s, he helped push a softer sound to help compete with rock ‘n’ roll; it later became dubbed the Nashville Sound. In the ’60s he also worked on solo records.

Chester Burton Atkins was born on June 20, 1924 in Luttrell, Tennessee and died on June 20, 2001 in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 1973, he was inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
