Midway through 1962, Watts first met Brian Jones, Ian “Stu” Stewart, Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards, all of whom were regulars at the London rhythm and blues clubs; nonetheless, it was not until January 1963 that Watts eventually agreed to join the Rolling Stones.
Charles Robert Watts was born in London’s Bloomsbury neighborhood at the University College Hospital. His father, Charles Richard Watts, was a lorry driver for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, and his mother, Lillian Charlotte (née Eaves), had worked in a factory prior to marrying Charles Richard Watts. Charles Richard Watts was Charles Robert Watts’ grandfather.
Watts was given the nickname “The Wembley Whammer” by Jagger, and he credited jazz as being a huge influence on his playing style. At the time of Watts’ passing, he, Jagger, and Richards were the only band members to have appeared on each and every one of the Rolling Stones’ studio albums.
Watts, who had been earning a consistent wage from his concerts, was initially unable to be paid by the band even though they had the financial means to do so. On February 2, 1963, he made his debut in front of the public for the first time as a permanent member at the Ealing Jazz Club. During live performances, Jagger would typically introduce Watts as “The Wembley Whammer” before Watts would take the stage.
Outside of his time as a Rolling Stones member, Watts was active in a wide variety of activities. Ode to a High Flying Bird was the title of the cartoon that he published as an homage to Charlie Parker in December of 1964. Rock was where he built his name, but jazz was where he found the most satisfaction as a listener.
It was on August 30, 2019, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, when Watts played his final live show with the band. Throughout his whole tenure with the band, he had never been absent from even a single performance. He is the only member of the Rolling Stones, together with Jagger and Richards, to have had an appearance on each and every one of their albums.
Watts wed his longtime girlfriend Shirley Ann Shepherd on October 14, 1964. Shepherd was born on September 11, 1938, and passed away on December 16, 2022. Watts had met Shepherd before he joined the Rolling Stones in 1963. The couple had one child together, a girl named Seraphina who was born in March of 1968.
Around the middle of the 1980s, Watts’ consumption of alcohol and drugs, which had previously been moderate, increased to dangerous levels. Despite the fact that Watts had given up smoking in the late 1980s, he was nevertheless diagnosed with throat cancer in June of 2004.
Warm and Tender was initially released by the Charlie Watts Quintet in 1993. Bernard Fowler was a member of the band at the time of its creation. Long Ago and Far Away was an album that was released by this same group in 1996.

On August 24, 2021, Watts passed away while surrounded by members of his family in a hospital in London. He was 80. Watts’ current and past bandmates, Jagger, Richards, and Wood, as well as Wyman, paid tribute to Watts after his passing.
