The Early Years and Lashley’s Background in Wrestling
In 1995, Lashley registered at Missouri Valley College (MVC). He thrived while competing for their wrestling team, earning All American status four times. Additionally, he maintained a 144-26 overall record while in college, was a three-time NAIA National Champion, and served as the team’s captain for three years. His 520 career takedowns remain a school record for the MVC.
He earned a degree in human service agency administration from MVC in 1999. Due to the success of the wrestling teams he played for in 1996 and 1997, he was later honored into the MVC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006 and again in 2007.
Military and Wrestling Life Together
Lashley served in the American Army after graduating. There, where he continued to wrestle, he won a silver medal in the senior freestyle division of the CISM Military World Championship in 2002. Along the way, he placed third at the 2003 World Team Trials and won the US Senior National Championship twice. Lashley’s ambitions of competing in the 2004 Olympics were dashed after he injured his knee while working at a bank where a robbery occurred in 2003.
Professional Wrestling and WWE
Lashley started his career in professional wrestling in November 2004, following in the footsteps of numerous other amateur wrestlers. In particular, he signed a developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and was given the Ohio Valley Wrestling development region. He was a part of the Bolin Services stable along with Mike Mondo and Ken Doane and was first known as Blaster Lashley. Bolin Services, however, started to go apart at that point when Lashley refused to assist Doane in winning matches, leading to his turning around and adopting the moniker Bobby Lashley.
A Pro Wrestling biography states that Lashley made his SmackDown debut in late 2005. By defeating JBL within a few months, he won the title of United States Champion. He later engaged in a fight with King Booker for the American and the World Heavyweight titles.
