Bobby Braddock, who was born in Lakeland, Florida, in 1940, began his musical career as a pianist in a number of regional rock bands. He made the decision to move to Nashville in 1964 after finding some success as a songwriter for Billy Chambers and Jody Anderson. “I will risk looking like a damned fool in my quest for a hit song.” — Bobby Braddock
And quest he did, it was as a songwriter that Braddock would leave his greatest legacy.
With Tammy Wynette’s “D-I-V-O-R-C-E.” Braddock shot to his first major triumph in 1968. In later years, he continued to work closely with both Wynette and George Jones; perhaps their most notable collaboration was on Jones’ 1980 song “He Stopped Loving Her Today” which went on to become a classic.
Braddock continued to make music well into the twenty-first century, including the humorous “I Wanna Talk About Me” by Toby Keith and the bizarre barroom narrative “People are Crazy.” by Billy Currington.
Braddock was chosen for the Country Music Hall of Fame induction in 2011. Bobby Braddock’s net worth is projected to be $25 million as of 2023.
Braddock was discussed in an episode of Malcolm Gladwell’s “Revisionist History” podcast in 2017. Gladwell examined the emotional attraction of country music in comparison to other genres in the episode. Braddock was called “The King of Tears” by Gladwell.
