Billy Clyde Gillispie, often known by his initials BCG and Billy Clyde, is an American collegiate basketball player who was born on November 7, 1959. His estimated net worth is $3 million. When Gillispie was the head coach at Kentucky, he was scrutinized more than just about any other basketball coach in the world. Billy Gillispie was fired as the head coach of the Wildcats after two seasons because the limelight became a little too intense for him.
While working as a graduate assistant at Sam Houston State University and Southwest Texas, Gillispie began his journey toward a prominent coaching position. In 1994, he returned to Division I basketball as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Baylor after a brief period of time as a highly successful high school coach and junior college coach. Three years later, he joined a rising star, joining Bill Self at Tulsa as his assistant. Self followed Gillespie to Champaign in 2000 to take the head coaching position at Illinois, where he assisted in recruiting the players that shared the Big Ten championships in 2001 and 2002. Gillespie was appointed to take over as UTEP’s head coach following the 2002 campaign.
The El Paso Miners had a 6-24 record in Gillispie’s first season there; in his second, he brought in a top-25 recruiting class and led the team to its first conference championship in 12 years. Gillispie took over the Texas A&M team after spending two years at UTEP. He guided the Aggies to two NCAA trips in three seasons and a 31-17 overall record.
Because of that, in addition to his reputation as a relentless worker and skilled recruiter, he received a job offer to succeed Tubby Smith in one of the most esteemed positions in college basketball.
Off the field, several of Gillispie’s strategies infuriated his rival coaches. The National Association of Basketball Coaches issued strongly worded news statements in response to the acceptance of a verbal commitment from an eighth grader and the use of NCAA exceptions to shift “midnight madness”
But more than any issue, it was his won-loss record that ultimately proved fatal. Losses to Gardner Webb and San Diego State in the early going during his first season with the Wildcats were not the best of starts. The Catamounts, though, bounced back to qualify for the NCAA Tournament once more, and they may have been a more difficult opponent if freshman forward Patrick Patterson and guard Jodie Meeks hadn’t sustained serious injuries.
The second year in Lexington was less successful, ending with an 8-8 SEC record and an NIT quarterfinal loss.
On March 27, 2009, he was let go.
Gillispie has made headlines ever since he was fired. In May, he launched a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the university, and in August, he was taken into custody for his third DUI since 1999.
