Sills made her professional debut while travelling with the Gilbert and Sullivan repertory group in 1945, when she was just sixteen years old. As the Spanish gypsy Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen, she made her operatic debut after several years of performing in operettas. Sills sang with a number of touring companies between 1947 and 1955, honing the abilities that would later make her one of America’s favorite operatic performers. At the New York City Opera in 1955, Sills performed as Rosalinde in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. People started to notice her incredible potential following this performance.
