About Barry Sanders
Barry Sanders was the only running back who could convert a two-yard loss into an 80-yard score. He was a genuine danger to win every time he touched the ball and was arguably the most elusive runner to ever play the game. Sanders, a graduate of Oklahoma State University, cut, spun, juked, and ran his way onto the list of the best running backs of all time with the Detroit Lions and into a Hall of Fame career.
Sanders, who was chosen by the Lions with the third overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, immediately captured the attention of NFL fans with an 18-yard run on his first carry and a touchdown on his fourth attempt. In that first game, he also ran for 71 yards on only nine attempts, averaging 7.9 yards each time he touched the ball. The most astonishing aspect of his performance, though, may be the fact that it occurred just three days after he signed his first deal with the Lions, ending a holdout that cost him his entire first training camp.
After carrying for 1,470 yards, just ten yards short of winning the rushing title, Sanders went on to win Rookie of the Year honors. In the process, he demonstrated his disinterest in receiving personal recognition by refusing to re-enter the season finale just so he could establish the record.
If defenders weren’t aware of Sanders’ skills after his rookie season, they most definitely were by the end of his second season.
He ran the ball 2,053 yards, averaging a staggering 6.2 yards per carry, and compiling one of the greatest seasons ever for a running back.
Sanders troubled defenses over the following ten years. He frequently appeared to be bottled up before breaking free for a significant gain. Along the way, he accomplished numerous milestones and won numerous accolades. However, he rarely had a strong supporting cast around him, therefore he never won the Super Bowl title he so fervently desired.
Sanders became the only running back in NFL history to rush for more than 1,000 yards ten times in his first ten seasons. He never ever ran for less than 1,300 yards in a season once in his career. He exceeded 1,500 yards on the ground five times, and two more times he came close.
Sanders is undoubtedly the greatest pure runner of all time based on his performance statistics. He was selected for the Pro Bowl each year he played and was an All-Pro eight times. In 1997, he also received the NFL MVP award.
But Sanders quit the game while still in his prime and just short of matching Walter Payton’s all-time rushing record because he was fed up with the losing attitude that pervaded the Lions at the time. Nevertheless, he took numerous NFL records as well as practically every Lions rushing record with him. And in 2004, he received the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s justly deserved induction.
