Aung San Suu Kyi, a politician, diplomat, and author from Myanmar, was born there on June 19, 1945. Her estimated net worth is $5 million. Aung San, her father, was hailed as a hero for leading Myanmar to independence from Great Britain. But he was murdered when she was just two years old. In 1969, Aung San Suu Kyi received her degree from Oxford University. She got married, had two kids, worked and went to school in India and England. Following her release, Aung San Suu Kyi launched a political campaign to support democracy in Myanmar and put an end to the country’s violations of human rights.
She was ultimately permitted to make the trip to Oslo, Norway, in 2012 to formally claim the Nobel Peace Prize she had been given in 1991, when she had been imprisoned. The awarding of Aung San Suu Kyi’s Congressional Gold Medal was delayed as well. She was given it in 2008, and in 2012, she finally received it. A woman who had been a political prisoner was also elected to Myanmar’s Parliament in April 2012.
