Born Gordon Arthur Kelly, he was abandoned only a few weeks later and adopted by Mary and Fulton John Linkletter, he never had any contact with his birth family. His adoptive father was an evangelical preacher which clearly influenced Linkletter’s personal philosophy. He graduated from San Diego State University and soon went to work for CBS radio hosting House Party for 25 years and for NBC where he hosted People are Funny for 19 years, both shows moved from radio to television. He is best known for interviewing children on House Party and Kid’s Say the Darndest Things, he wrote a series of books based on these conversations. At one point he had five prime-time network television programs scheduled, which is unique. He married Lois Foerster in 1935, they would have celebrated their 75th anniversary in November. They had five children, three of whom died, including his daughter Diane who jumped from a sixth-story window to her death. Linkletter maintained this was the result of LSD, although no drugs were detected. He died at home with no significant medical issues.
