Greek philosopher and polymath Aristotle (384–322 BC) is thought to have had a net worth of $150,000. Aristotle is a renowned thinker from antiquity who is admired for his wisdom and insight. Greek philosopher Aristotle lived in the fourth century BC. Aristotle not only produced the most influential ideas in zoology, physics, logic, western philosophy, and many other fields, but he also educated some of the greatest individuals in history.
In 384 BC, King Amyntas of Macedon’s personal physician, Aristotle, was born. Raised among the aristocracy, he relocated to Athens at the age of 18 to study at Plato’s academy. He would remain under Plato’s instruction there for 20 years, until his passing. He left Athens for the island of Lesbos to pursue his studies in zoology and biology, where he also met his wife and gave birth to their daughter.
Alexander the Great is instructed by Aristotle
King Philip II of Macedon invited him to teach his son, Alexander, who would grow up to be Alexander the Great, in 343 BC. He oversaw the royal academy while in Macedon and instructed future monarchs Ptolemy and Cassander in addition to Alexander.
In 335 BC, he relocated from Macedon to Athens and founded his own institution, the Lyceum. His twelve years of teaching here was when he produced the majority of his remaining body of work. Aristotle left Athens as anti-Macedon sentiment increased and unfounded allegations of his involvement in Alexander the Great’s demise grew.
He passed away from natural causes a year later, in 322 BC.
The Legacy of Aristotle
Aristotle’s writings have had a lasting influence on society long after his death. His Lyceum served as a training ground for many eminent thinkers, and his published works have been essential to both classical and modern philosophy, influencing modern philosophers like Friedrich Nietzsche and Ayn Rand. Only one-third of his total body of work is thought to be be in existence.
His use of the syllogism, a form of reasoning that involves a main premise, a minor premise, and a conclusion, is one of his most significant contributions to logic and deductive reasoning. For instance, All As Are Bs, All Bs Are Cs, and All As Are Cs.
