In New York City on August 3, 1923, Anne Hannah Golofski The United States more than any other country saw Anne Klein’s clothing become popular. She was a model American designer. When she founded Junior Sophisticates in 1948 at the age of just 25, she helped pave the path for future women in the fashion business. She wouldn’t officially debut Anne Klein and Co. as a fashion brand until 1968.
At a time when ladies were expected to wear predominantly dresses, Anne Klein’s sophisticated aesthetic and emphasis on numerous separates were distinctive. Her clothes all had a decidedly stylish urban feel and could be mixed and matched.
By the time Klein founded Anne Klein & Co., her ready-to-wear apparel had won numerous accolades. Her pieces were an instant smash because they dared to give a woman what she needed instead of what some out-of-touch designers believed they wanted. They were created for comfort as well as fashion. Her career and empire were begun by her early success with Junior Sophisticates, which is still going strong today.
On March 19, 1974, Anne Klein passed away from breast cancer, leaving her business in ruins. Following numerous financial setbacks and ownership changes, designer Donna Karan seized control of the business. Before departing to launch her own brand, DKNY, she brought the company back to its previous glory. With new owners and management who are motivated by the idea and character of the woman herself, Anne Klein and Co. is still operating today.
Designer Isabel Toledo, who was born in Cuba, has been running Anne Klein since the fall of 2007 as the business pushes to become more upscale and regain its identity. The Anne Klein line features gorgeous shoes, handbags, jewelry, sunglasses, scarves, and other accessories in addition to evening gowns, pantsuits, trousers, coats, and sweaters.
