Paul Andrew Richter, an American actor, comedian, writer, and late-night talk show announcer, was born on October 28, 1966. His estimated net worth is $10 million. Andy Richter, who is forever known as Conan O’Brien’s sidekick and is probably glad of it, was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As the son of a college professor who also designed kitchen cabinets and the brother of three brothers, he grew up in Yorkville, Illinois.
Richter first shown his charm and charisma in high school, when he was chosen as prom king. Richter chose to major in film at Columbia College Chicago, so one can only infer that he liked being in the spotlight. Richter ventured out and enrolled in classes at Chicago’s Improv Olympic, a comedy club and school equivalent to Second City, where he quickly rose to the position of house performer. But he developed his comedic skills at the Annoyance Theater, another improv club in the Chicago region, before getting his big break.
The hit sitcom The Brady Bunch was reenacted in the theater word for word. The 1989 television program The Real Live Brady Bunch gained popularity and was soon invited to relocate to New York. Richter was currently in a pickle because he wasn’t a lead performer. Richter stepped into the part of Mike Brady, nevertheless, after the main actor who performed the character made the decision to stay home rather than travel to New York.
Richter was leaving for the city.
Conan’s presence
Melanie Hutsell and Beth Cahill, two of Richter’s fellow cast members in The Real Live Brady Bunch, eventually received gigs on Saturday Night Live. Ricther was able to mingle with SNL writers, producers, and actors thanks to this connection at the show’s after parties.
Richter first met the humorous author Robert Smigel at one of these after-parties. Smigel was chosen by Lorne Michaels to create a new talk show that would replace David Letterman’s NBC timeslot and title before Letterman moved to CBS.
Smigel desired for Richter to work as a writer on the program. However, Richter’s friendship with Conan O’Brien, the show’s host and a former writer and producer for Saturday Night Live, as well as his talent for easing the first nerves of new talk show hosts, quickly propelled Richter to the sidekick position.
Richter was on Late Night with Conan O’Brien for seven years, during which time he grew to enjoy the program. At the height of his fame, he made the decision to depart to pursue acting roles in movies and television.
Pushing the Limits
Richter is renowned for remarking that while he was satisfied with his time on Late Night, he believed it was time to spread his wings and see if there were any other opportunities for success. To pursue acting, he moved from New York to Los Angeles.
He shared a role with Chris Elliot, another former cast member of Late Night, but they were both former cast members of Late Night with David Letterman. This was a few years before he left the program. In the acclaimed hit Cabin Boy, Richter portrayed “Kenny” Later, he played a number of minor roles in movies like Elf, Dr. Doolittle 2, and Scary Movie 4. He appeared in episodes of Malcolm in the Middle and Just Shoot Me as a guest actor.
His first leading part was in the Walter Mitty-inspired Fox TV series Andy Richter Controls the Universe, in which Richter played a short story writer with a vivid imagination who worked in an uninteresting office. There was only one season of the show.
After the brief Quintuplets, his next program was the NBC program Andy Barker, P.I. O’Brien wrote and directed the film Barker. Despite receiving favorable reviews, it did not find an audience.
Back to Work
When O’Brien took over as host of NBC’s The Tonight Show, Richter continued to act but was glad to return to his roles as writer and sidekick (adding the title announcer).
Richter moved over to the talk show host’s new program, Conan, when NBC revised the late-night schedule and O’Brien quit Tonight.
