At the U.S. Nationals in 2005, Alicia made a comeback, taking first place on the balance beam and won gold medals in the floor and vault events. Alicia failed to compete at her typical level of excellence, with the exception of a contentious vault performance that nearly earned her a bronze medal. Some of the unfavorable press indicated that Sacramone was to blame for the United States team’s failure to win the gold medal. Even though she admitted some fault, the team and other analysts made clear that she could not be held entirely accountable for the outcomes due to mathematical constraints.
Sacramone left the sport of gymnastics in 2009, but she quickly came back six months later. Alicia was selected Sportsperson of the Year after winning two more medals at the 2011 U.S. Nationals—a gold on vault and a silver on the balancing beam—and is unquestionably someone to watch as a potential 2012 Olympic representative for the United States.
