About Ali Wong
Alexandra Dawn Wong is an American actress, comedian, and writer who is best known for her critically acclaimed Netflix series Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife. For the past 15 years, Ali had been one of the most influential figures in the show business.
After spending two years in Vietnam as a Fullbright scholar, upon her return to the States in 2008, she tried stand-up comedy at the Brainwash Cafe. A few months later, she moved to New York City with the aspiration to become a full-time stand-up comedian.
She was born on April 19, 1982, in San Francisco, California, and is the youngest of four children to Adolphus and Tammy Wong. Her father is a Chinese-American anaesthesiologist that worked for the Kaiser Permanente company for more than 30 years. Her mother immigrated from Hue, South Vietnam to the United States in the 1960s.
Often being referred to as Ali instead of Alexandra by her family, friends, and relatives, she decided to use that name when she became an actress and comedian in the early 2000s. It was in the year 2000 that she graduated from the San Francisco University High School where she was the student body class president.
Shortly after, she enrolled at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) from which she earned a major in Asian American studies. At the time, she discovered her love for performing and joined the largest Asian-American collegiate theater company LCC Theatre Company. In 2005, she graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian American studies.
Her first taste of popularity came in 2011 when she was added to Variety magazine’s list of “10 Comics to Watch”. By that time, Wong was making little to no money from her stand-up comedy skits so she worked odd jobs to support herself. In the early 2010s, Ali finally received the opportunities to partake in major talk shows such as The Tonight Show, and John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show. After that, she appeared in several episodes of Chelsea Lately, Hey Girl, and Best Week Ever. Her acting debut came in the Fox sitcom Breaking_In, in which she starred in three episodes.
Throughout the next few years, she had brief and supporting roles in the likes of Are You There, Chelsea?, Savages, Dealing with Idiots, Black Box, and Inside Amy Schumer. In 2016, Ali Wong’s career really began to bear fruit. Her hilarious and highly praised stand-up comedy skills were shown in the Netflix comedy special Ali Wong: Baby Cobra. The special was a huge success and led to the creation of a second released two years later – Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife.
Besides starring in star-packed box-office hits such as Bird Prey and Love, Victor, the talented actress and comedian has been consistently working as a director, producer, and writer. Apart from her television specials, some of the series that she contributed to as a director, producer, and writer are Funny As Hell, Fresh Off the Boat, and Always Be My Maybe.
The success of Ali Wong comes from her many transformations in the film industry. For the past five years, Ali’s career truly hit its peak and she finally landed various roles that helped display her acting abilities. Among some of her most popular roles are in Inside Amy Schumer, The Angry Birds Movie, The Lego Ninjago Movie, and Father Figures.
Since 2016, she has been a regular cast member of the ABC sitcom American Housewife. As of late 2019, she has been one of the leading cast members of the series Tuca and Bertie and Big Mouth.
