About Al Franken
In Minnesota’s 2008 Senate campaign, Al Franken was declared the winner on June 30, 2009, following a drawn-out recount and numerous legal challenges by Republican incumbent Norm Coleman. Al Franken, the Senator, on the Issues
Franken, a close friend of the late Minnesota Sen. Paul Wellstone, who perished in a plane crash in 2002, sees himself as continuing the staunchly progressive ideals of Wellstone.
Franken enthusiastically declared on July 6, 2009, that he is “ready to get to work” on “education, health care and energy issues.”
Concerning energy, Franken said “By investing in a genuine Apollo Program to investigate new sources, we need to take the issue of renewable energy seriously. The answer to our “addiction to oil” is right in front of us, and it includes everything from ethanol and biomass energy to solar and wind power.”
On Air America, Al Franken
Al Franken presided over the flagship daily talk show of Air America radio, the primary non-subscription radio station in the United States for liberal and progressive ideas, from March 2004 to February 2007.
At its height, Franken’s well-liked program had 1.5 million weekly unique listeners and included interviews, serious discussion, political humor, skits, and parodies of right-wing talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly.
His “Hate Email of the Day” section was a fan favorite.

Al and his high school friend Tom Davis frequented local comedy establishments like Dudley Riggs’ Cafe Expresso as teenagers because they wanted to act and write comedy.
Franken and Davis refined their comedic routine both in college and afterward, when Lorne Michaels saw them and recruited them as writers for his nascent program, Saturday Night Live. From 1975 through 1995, Franken worked as a writer and actor on Saturday Night Live. During that time, he won three Emmys for his writing.

When Al and Franni first met as college freshmen, they started dating right away. Five years later, they got married. Since 1987, Al has reportedly belonged to Al-Anon, most likely as a result of his wife’s alcoholism. Al wrote the screenplay for the 1994 movie “When a Man Loves a Woman.” a few years later.
Al has known renowned political analyst Norm Orenstein and New York Times columnist Tom Friedman since he was a young child, and the two have supposedly engaged in political rivalry.
